This artwork is based on a traditional Iranian fabric; a piece of cloth sewn on all sides with a slit in the middle to insert a blanket. This fabric was once used to cover and protect blankets and was decorated with embroidery. It symbolizes the concept of "andaroon" (the inner space) in Iranian culture — a hidden, feminine, and protected space where women were typically confined within the shadows and boundaries of the home.
In Iranian culture, the "andaroon" was a place for women; a hidden, silent space overshadowed by the "biroon" (the outside), which was the domain of men. With my body, my image, and myself, I have emerged from within this symbolic fabric. First, I pulled my head out. Then I drew on this same fabric with colored pencils.
This work is an invitation to tear open the boundaries between "andaroon" and "biroon" — not to break or destroy them, but to redefine presence. This time, the woman is not the one being watched but the watcher; not on the margins, but at the center.
